Grows in areas above 1000m in shallow soil over rock in the protection of boulders or on semi-exposed ledges. Appears to be resistant to competition and almost invariably occurs amongst grasses, herbs or low shrubs.

General Notes
Possesses gemmae (vegetative buds or bulbils) which appear as small outgrowths circling the stems in groups at regular intervals. These may drop off and develop into mature plants if conditions are suitable. The viability of using this as a means of cultivation is not known.
