Seed Information

Seed Collection

Very difficult to grow from seed. Seeds released from a capsule that splits on maturity ejecting the seeds. Only 1-2 weeks between ripening of first and last seeds. Cut mature capsules; dry until open to release seed. Clean with a fine sieve. Seed is also subject to insect predation.

Seed Treatment Method

Leaching Some species require extended time in nature weathering prior to germination as chemical inhibitors are broken down in the seed coat. Replicate this process by flushing away the inhibitor with frequent washing e.g. place the seeds in a stocking in a toilet cistern and drape it over the top for easy handling.

Seed Treatment Notes

Viable seed will sink if soaked overnight in water. Most commonly recommended treatment is nicking the hard seed coat, then leaching for 10-14 days. Results are unreliable. When leaching to grow from seed, and after nicking the hard seed coat, wrap the seeds in a muslin bag. Tie the bag at the top and secure in a container, such as a bucket or watering can, under a running tap for about 10-14 days. The bag may be secured in a toilet cistern where seeds are leached when toilet is flushed.

Cutting & Division Information

Usually grown from cuttings.
