Seed Information
Seed Collection
Seed is released within 3-14 days of seed maturity. Cut stalks with secateurs to collect, place upside down in a bag to dry, rub between hands to extract all seed and sieve to clean. If not sown soon after collection, seed requires several months of cold dry storage.
Seed Treatment Method
Bog Method The seeds of many wetland species need to be kept wet to germinate. Punch a hole in the side of a recycled polyfoam box so that it holds water to the required depth. Sit the tubes in the box to germinate. Once germinated, punch holes in the bottom of the box to allow drainage.
Seed Treatment Notes
Surface sow seed in warm conditions. Heat treatment may improve results, especially for seed that is not fresh. Leaching (running water for 2-4 hours or soaking for 12 hours, changing the water every 4 hours) may also improve results. Bolboschoenus species have been used successfully in direct seeding.
Cutting & Division Information
Grown easily by division of suckers.
